Our Wesleyan Heritage: Revive Us Again
Kevin delivered a message on Wesleyan heritage as part of a potential summer worship series, focusing on John Wesley’s family background and early influences. He read from Luke 2:41-52 about Jesus in the temple and then discussed how Wesley grew up in a family caught between Anglican and Puritan beliefs during a time of religious turmoil. Kevin highlighted how Wesley’s parents, Samuel and Susanna, modeled faith through Bible studies that eventually attracted over 200 people, and emphasized the importance of seeking, hearing, and knowing God. He explained how Wesley’s family taught perseverance through difficult circumstances, including a house fire when Wesley was five years old and his father’s financial struggles. Kevin concluded by discussing Wesley’s own determination in spreading the gospel despite opposition, traveling 20,000 miles annually to preach in various settings, and noted that if the series is chosen for summer, they would explore what Wesleyan heritage might mean for their future, focusing on listening to each other and loving despite disagreements.
