What’s Love Got to Do with Anger?
This is week 7 of our summer worship series in which we are focusing on 1 Corinthians 13. Kevin emphasized the importance of showing the world who we are in Christ, particularly by avoiding easy anger in a world that seems increasingly polarized and divided. He referenced Galatians 5:13-15 to highlight that love should characterize our lives and warned against the destructive nature of biting and devouring each other. He discussed the prevalence of anger in the world and how it often masks deeper emotions like disappointment or fear.
Kevin shared insights from experts like Brene Brown and Gary Chapman, noting that anger often masks deeper emotions such as disappointment, fear, or rejection, and that it can be easier to express anger than the underlying feelings. Kevin emphasized the importance of examining what is beneath anger and suggested that, while unaddressed anger can be harmful, it can also serve as a catalyst for transformation when properly managed and offered to God
Kevin shared three strategies for handling anger constructively: acknowledging the anger, getting curious about the underlying feelings, and breathing before speaking. He emphasized that acknowledging anger is essential for healing, getting curious helps examine the root causes, and taking a breath before speaking can prevent destructive responses. Kevin referenced Scripture, particularly James 3, to illustrate how words can cause significant harm, and stressed that breathing before speaking allows for clearer thinking and more intentional communication.
