Stop Going to Church
Preceding our congregation meeting, Pastor Kevin spoke about the church. The New Testament word used that is translated as church is ecclesia. In Greek, ecclesia is a generic word that refers to a gathering of people, a crowd, even a mob (see Acts 19). The New Testament writes chose the generic Greek word ecclesia to refer to the movement of Christ followers.
Unlike the way we use the word church to often refer to a location. “I am going to church.” Ecclesia didn’t refer to a location but to a moving presence, a gathering of Christ followers. Jesus said, “Where to two or three are gathering in my name, there I am.” Essentially, Jesus was saying where two or three gather in my name, there is ecclesia. In this way, it has never been possible to go to church.
